As you know Wade proposed in the last media meeting that the district will be moving to a single sign-on for students for as many systems as possible in the district. Currently different building use different data for the following:
Novell Login - Password
Patron ID - for Destiny
Accelerated Reader
Math programs
Keyboarding
Culinary
Skyward
Moodle
CCC
This is not the whole list but the ones I can remember at this point. Currently, when students log in to these different systems the log in from one system to the next may be different as well as the password may be different.
The idea is to have one log-in and one password for all systems for the students' entire school career is the goal.
Since Skyward is our student management system and every student is entered into that system upon enrollment the Skyward log in would be most logical. This log in is the first 5 letters of a student's last name, the first 3 letters of their first name followed by three 000's. Students have the same first and last names would have 001, 002 etc.
Where this gets tricky is that when a student as a last name shorter than 5 characters the skyward system enters spaces. This situation works for Skyward but does not work for Novell. Wade and Fran Wilke are discussing the possibilities of getting this changed.
Traditionally, the Patron ID has been the Skyward "Other ID" which is the 6 digit number you see for each patron. Switching to the new log in the data could remain a barcode and would be able to be scanned with the bar code reader. If we make the switch, all current patron data ie. checkout history etc will probably be lost because there isn't a way to transfer the data to the new ID.
Having it a combination of letters and numbers does make it more difficult in that respect. But is it better for the student to have only one ID to remember for system?
Please think about this and please click on the Discussion tab above and post your thoughts and comments. Is there a time we could meet to discuss? How many of you will be at the Warlick book discussion next Monday?
